These platforms handle the part of hiring that sits between the CV screen and the in-person or panel interview: getting a candidate on camera, either live over a scheduled video call or recorded answering a set of questions in their own time, so a hiring manager or recruiter can watch it before deciding who moves forward. That covers scheduling and sending invites, hosting the interview itself, recording and storing it, and often scoring or ranking candidates against structured criteria or, increasingly, AI-driven analysis of their answers. Once this is in place, a recruiter can review forty applicants for a role in an afternoon instead of running forty phone screens across two weeks.

People start looking for this when their hiring pipeline is choking on volume, or when interviews keep getting delayed because five people's calendars won't line up. A recruiter doing twenty roles at once cannot personally phone-screen every applicant; a hiring manager doesn't have time to sit through first-round conversations that are 80% the same three questions; a distributed team is trying to interview candidates across time zones without everyone losing an evening to it. Sometimes the trigger is more specific — a legal or DEI requirement to apply consistent, documented criteria to every candidate, or a need to bring more people (a panel, a client, a hiring manager who's travelling) into a decision without adding another meeting.

'Why this' rather than 'why not just Zoom': these tools add structure, workflow and a record that a generic video call doesn't.

The main split is between one-way (asynchronous) interviewing, where candidates record answers to preset questions on their own schedule, and live video interviewing with scheduling and panel tools built around it — some vendors do both. From there, differences show up in how much of the assessment work is automated: some platforms are mainly infrastructure for recording, sharing and scoring interviews manually, while others apply AI scoring, transcription, or candidate ranking, which raises questions worth asking directly about accuracy, bias testing and what happens when a hiring manager disagrees with the score. Buyers should also compare integration depth with the applicant tracking system already in use, candidate experience (completion rates on one-way interviews vary a lot by how the invite and interface feel), and whether pricing is per seat, per interview, or per hire, since that materially changes the cost at volume.
