These businesses build and run the software that sits on top of your Google Ads and Microsoft Ads accounts, doing the work that a human would otherwise have to do inside the ad platform's own interface: adjusting bids by keyword or product, generating and testing ad copy variants, restructuring campaigns around your product feed, and pacing budget across the day rather than letting it run out by lunchtime. Hire one of these and what changes is the mechanics of the account — bids move automatically in response to auction pressure and conversion data, thousands of product ads get created and refreshed from your catalogue feed without anyone typing them in one by one, and the weekly reporting that used to mean pulling numbers from three interfaces into a spreadsheet turns into a dashboard.

People come looking for this when their search advertising has outgrown what a person can reasonably manage by hand. An account that started with fifty keywords now has thousands of product SKUs feeding it, or ad spend has grown to the point where a few percentage points of wasted budget matters, or the marketer running it is spending entire days on bid adjustments instead of strategy. Others arrive because they're an agency managing dozens of client accounts and need consistency across them, or because they've tried the ad platform's own automated bidding and found it's a black box that doesn't reflect their margins, seasonality or shopping feed. In all these cases the underlying issue is the same: search advertising has become too large or too fast-moving to run manually without either overspending or under-optimising.

The providers here split mainly on how much they automate versus how much control they leave with you. Some are rules-based — you set the logic (raise bids when ROAS is above X, pause SKUs out of stock) and the software executes it; others use machine learning to make bid decisions directly, which can outperform rules but is harder to audit when something goes wrong. There's also a divide between tools built for e-commerce feed management, where the value is in handling thousands of SKUs and shopping ads, and tools built around keyword-level search campaigns for service businesses. Some only work within Google's ecosystem, others also cover Microsoft Ads and marketplaces like Amazon, which matters if your spend is split across platforms. Worth comparing: how transparent the bidding logic is, whether pricing is a flat fee or a cut of ad spend, how well it handles your specific feed or account structure, and whether it's built for a single advertiser or for an agency running many accounts at once.
