These are the businesses you bring in when you need work done rather than software bought — a website rebuilt, a HubSpot instance implemented properly, a brand refreshed, a marketing campaign planned and executed, or a piece of custom software built and shipped. You hand them a brief and a budget, and what changes is that the work actually happens: the site launches, the CRM is configured and adopted, the campaign runs, the app ships. The output is deliverables and outcomes, not a licence key.

People end up looking for this kind of help for fairly ordinary reasons. Marketing needs to grow but there's no one who can write, design and run campaigns at the pace the business wants. A new platform — HubSpot, Salesforce, a custom system — has been bought but nobody in-house knows how to configure it properly, so it sits half-used. The brand looks dated, the website converts poorly, or a product idea needs to become working software and there's no engineering team free to build it. In most cases the company has a goal and a deadline, but not the specific skills or spare hands to hit it internally.

Where these providers differ is scope, specialisation and how they engage. Some are broad marketing agencies covering everything from SEO to paid social to email; others are narrow specialists in one platform or discipline, like HubSpot implementation or web development, and know that one thing deeply. Some work as strategic consultants who plan and hand off; others act as an extension of your team, doing the execution month after month on retainer. Team size matters too — a two-person shop gives you close attention but limited bandwidth, while a 200-person firm can staff a large implementation but may put you a few layers from the people actually doing the work. When comparing them, look at what they've actually shipped for companies your size, whether they're paid for a project or a retainer, and whether they're generalists you'll need to manage closely or specialists who can be trusted to just get the specific job done.
