These are the vendors that manage how a business with more than one location shows up in local search, on maps, and to nearby customers. Concretely, that means keeping business listings (name, address, phone, hours) accurate and consistent across Google Business Profile, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook and dozens of directories; monitoring and responding to reviews at scale; optimising each location's presence so it ranks for "near me" and city-based searches; and running the store locator or dealer locator that sits on the company website so a customer can actually find the nearest branch, get directions, or check what's in stock there. When this is working, a company's 50 or 500 locations all appear correctly and competitively wherever people are searching, instead of each one drifting out of date on its own.
The trigger is usually some combination of visible mess and invisible loss. A franchise opens a new location and it doesn't show up on Google for months. An old address or phone number keeps surfacing from a directory nobody remembers submitting to. Reviews pile up unanswered because no one at head office owns them, or because each store manager is left to handle it inconsistently. Corporate marketing has no way to see which locations are ranking well and which are being ignored, and individual managers have neither the time nor the SEO knowledge to fix it themselves. Store locator tools are narrower: an embeddable widget with geolocation, filtering and sometimes inventory feeds, built to convert search traffic into foot traffic.
What separates them in practice is how many locations they're built for and how much they automate versus require a human to run. Compare providers on how many directories and data partners they actually sync with, whether review responses are templated, AI-drafted or handled by a real person, how deep the per-location reporting goes versus just corporate roll-ups, whether they integrate with your franchise or POS system for hours and inventory, and whether you're buying self-serve software or paying for an agency team to manage it. Price is almost always per location, so the gap between a lean listings tool and a full-service local SEO agency shows up fast once you multiply by store count.
