These businesses build, license or curate the actual training material your staff sit through: compliance modules, skills courses, onboarding programmes, leadership development, technical upskilling. Some are hired to produce bespoke content from scratch, working with your subject matter experts to turn a process or a policy into a course, a simulation or a set of microlearning videos. Others sell access to a ready-made catalogue that you plug into your existing LMS, so instead of building anything you're licensing thousands of hours of pre-made content across software, leadership, safety and compliance topics. A few specialise in a format, such as short AI-generated video lessons, scenario-based simulations for soft skills, or interactive practice environments for technical roles.
People end up looking for this when the training they have isn't working or doesn't exist. A compliance deadline is approaching and there's no course covering the new regulation. Onboarding is inconsistent because it depends on whichever manager happens to be free that week. Employees are logging into the LMS and finding content that's outdated, generic, or was written five years ago for a different industry. Sometimes the trigger is scale: a company growing fast needs to train hundreds of new hires a quarter and can't keep producing training manually. Sometimes it's the opposite problem — a learning team has a good LMS but no content strategy, and they're being asked why completion rates are low and nobody remembers what they learned.
The main split is build versus buy. Custom content providers work like a production studio: you get instructional designers, video production and often e-learning developers who translate your internal knowledge into a finished course, which suits anything specific to your company — your product, your processes, your compliance obligations. Catalogue providers sell breadth and speed: you get instant access to a large, maintained library covering common workplace topics, which suits generic skills training but won't reflect anything unique to your business. A third group focuses on format innovation, betting that shorter, more interactive or AI-assisted content gets better completion rates than a 40-minute video with a quiz at the end.
When comparing them, look at how content gets updated (a static library that goes stale is a real cost), whether pricing is per-seat, per-course or a flat licence, how well the output integrates with the LMS you already run, and whether you're actually being sold content or a full authoring platform that expects your team to build things themselves. Ask for a sample course and completion data from an existing client before you commit, not just a demo of the admin dashboard.
