These providers run the machinery that buys, targets and serves ads across multiple channels at once — display, video, mobile, in-app and native inventory — rather than leaving each channel to be bought and managed on its own. In practice that means bidding into ad exchanges on your behalf using machine learning models, building and syncing retargeting audiences so someone who viewed a product on your site sees a relevant ad on a different app or publisher later that day, serving the actual creative, and rolling all of it into one reporting view instead of five logins.

People end up here because their advertising has grown sideways rather than up: a display campaign here, a mobile network there, a separate retargeting pixel, a video buy through another vendor, each with its own budget, its own dashboard and its own idea of what a conversion is. The same customer gets hit by three unrelated campaigns, nobody can say which channel actually closed the sale, and every new channel added means another contract, another login and another spreadsheet to reconcile at month end. For ecommerce sellers this shows up as abandoned carts that never get followed up consistently; for B2B teams it shows up as target accounts that get a display ad but no coordinated follow-through elsewhere.

The common fix is a layer that sits above the individual exchanges and networks and handles bidding, targeting and creative delivery centrally, using shared audience and pixel data so a signal picked up in one channel informs spend in another. Where these providers genuinely differ is in what they're actually built for: some are tuned for ecommerce product-feed retargeting, some for account-based targeting of named B2B accounts, some for mobile app install and monetization, and some are lower-level ad server or DSP infrastructure that agencies build their own stack on top of. Worth comparing on which inventory they actually reach — open-web display, in-app, connected TV — whether it's self-serve software or a managed buying service, how spend and fees are structured (flat SaaS fee versus a markup on media), how deep their attribution and reporting actually goes, and whether they'll plug into your existing CRM or product feed or expect you to feed them manually.
